The Mirror

I was slowly making this drawing while I was taking breaks from studying. I really liked the Dutch still lives and this is kind of like my take on it. Some people don't like realism, but I do, since I find it poetic. Then again, I find other styles like Impressionism and Expressionism as poetic as well. So I am a weird individual.
I am also working on my children's book but I have to slow it down to keep studying more artists. Well, that I graduated doesn't mean I stopped learning.
Good news! My mother found the story books I used read as a little kid with one of my sisters. Inspiration and some memories indeed!

Marry (Mysterious) Christmas

It's been quite a mysterious month and a shocking year... you know what I mean, 2009! Don't give me that look!

I like to do Christmas pieces. I always feel the tenderness of people, charming with one another, a la Hardon Sunblom, with his Belly Coca-Cola Santa, giving Macy's gifts to everyone,

for the best of humanity.

However, I wanted to draw something less warming and more mysterious, as the title shows.

I always wondered, "Well, what if Santa didn't know from the top this belly spirit who were

naughty and who were nice? What if there's some sort of spirit that check on us when people

decorate their Christmas trees?" So, hence, I drew one. Some sort of serious lady that

checks on you through Christmas Adornments, if you were good the whole year. Something

creepy to think about, children. A la Grimm Brothers' Stories.

And as for 2009, I still think it was the weirdest, shocking and unfolding year I ever had.

I hope for next year, I'll be able to heal for so many surprises every month I had to deal with.

Me encanta crear piezas para Navidad. Siempre he sentido el sentimiento suave de las personas,

tratándose bien unas con otras, a la Hardon Sunblom, con su Santa Claus Coca-cola-lero y su

barriguita cálida, dándoles regalos a todos, por el bien de la humanidad.

Sin embargo, quise dibujar algo menos cálido y mas intrigante, como el titulo de mi diario lo

implica. Me he preguntado, "Que tal si Santa no sabe desde el espíritu de su barriguita quienes

han sido buenos o malos? Que tal si hay un espíritu que nos supervisa mientras decoramos

nuestros arboles navideños?" Entonces, he aquí una pieza a tal pensamiento. Una mujercilla

un tanto seria que por medio de las esferas decorativas puede ver si fuiste una buena persona

en todo el año. Algo tenebroso para los niños para que se pongan a pensar, un aire a los cuentos

de los hermanos Grimm.

Ahora, mis pensamientos del 2009, aun pienso que fue el año mas raro, sorprendente y

revelador que he tenido. Espero que en el siguiente año, me pueda recuperar de tanto

trauma que tuve que lidiar cada mes.

Well, I'm here and I'm still drawing. So many adventures to tell! So little space...

Anyways, good news! I passed my citizenship test! Yes, I had a very very nice gentleman to ask me questions and asked about my dreams, and if I was ever coming back to my country to visit. He even had a Colombian Bandanna! So cute!

In other news, my ear was feeling a little bad lately but I am now better. I wonder what happened! Suddenly I had a fever and the next day, my right ear was all weird. Just a couple of days ago I am back to hearing well, but geez, scary! However, the positive from this experience, I can now listen better! Hey, it's good to see the positive... even in sickness.

So, Am I still drawing? Always! Am I still causing trouble? Of course. Am I still a Vegetable sprout?Perhaps. I am leaving you an oil painting that I've done with my hand leaves. I am doing a couple of pieces that I want to make sure they are shiny enough to show off and print them offs. Exciting!

There are still other news I am going to post. Nevertheless, I like to post concrete stuff that is going to happen or have happened! So hence the reason of my delay in posting stuff. But I am always coming back! Like... a vegetable, yes.

Computer Alzhimer's

It happened a week ago.
I was chilling, cleaning and making some lunch for everybody in the house when suddenly, the computer shuts off. I thought, "this is odd. I guess it restarted because of an update" and didn't think too much about it. When I'm done, I'm talking to my boyfriend and I want to open the file I was working on the night before.
It showed as if it didn't existed.
I became paralyzed and a chill ran over my spine.
I cried, I went numb, I tried to fix it. My boyfriend gave me suggestions, we asked HP Support, etc. In the end, all the files from my dual hard drive disappeared. I mean, the whole hard drive is non-existent! Along with all my files.
I did backed up the ones before May (YES! THESIS WAS SAVED D:) but not afterwards because I back up every three or four months or so, without thinking that my computer was going to pull this one off this soon. So good thing I saved some of my files in jpegs in deviantart and my portfolio online but still, it's sad, sad!

Good news is that I bought a new computer for own sake without a dual hard drive. And that boyfriend has been very supportive and my cousin Melissa's blog is so good... you should read it! At http://diaryofanillegalimmigrant.blogspot.com/

The bad is what I went through. Not only that but Immigration is being unfair to me in terms of being disorganized about my case. That's a whole story I might write about when it's done and dealt with.

I'll draw to ease my pains...

haha, imagine, the idea of my family leaving to another world didn't sink until some days later.

I was just thinking about how everything started when I was reading the test study guide for my citizenship... and then I was like, "I should draw something about this." So there.

Jaja, la idea de que me iba a mudar a un mundo totalmente al mio no lo tomé tan en serio hasta unos cuantos días despies.

Estaba pensando como todo esto empezó para mi mientas revisaba el libro para estudiar el test de la ciudadanía... y despues me dije, "Tengo que dibujar algo al respecto". Y ahí lo tienen.

Hey! I'm here and "washingtondicing"... ok., it's a term I made up but hey! Original to what I'm doing which is exploring the city and its surroundings. So far, I love it! Even though it's raining and I got soaked once trying to carry my groceries, haha. So, here's an aproximation to what happened to me a couple of days ago:

¡Hey! Estoy aquí y estoy "washingtondiciando".... ok, ya se que es una palabra que me inventé, pero, ¡hey! Es algo cercano a lo que se refiere en explorar la ciudad y sus alrededores. ¡Hasta ahora lo he gozado bastante! Asi sea que ha estado lloviendo y en una ocación, me empapé toda cuando mientras cargaba mi compra, ¡jaja! Y bueno, aquí esta una aproximación a lo que pasó hace un par de días:

Yeah, I said "approximation"! You know me, most of the stuff I like drawing myself is with food (like a yummi city which bushes and roads can be eaten). Does it mean Washington D.C. is eatable? It does have good restaurants so, I must say yes!

Si, ¡dijé "aproximación"! Ud. ya saben mi mania de estar dibujandome con comida (como en ciudades llenas de delicias el cual tiene plantas y pavimentos que se pueden comer). ¿Esto significará que Washington D.C. se puede comer? Pues, sí tiene buenos restaurantes, asi que debo responder que... ¡si! ¡Afirmativo!

Wow, 52 pages. A cool semester into this project! A clarification: I will never support guerrillas groups (come on, after all the harm they have done to my country!). Having a guerrilla girl as a protagonist does not reflect support to these groups but I wanted to portray a character that goes through a meaningful change from evil to goodness and I hope my readers would find the metaphor behind this character. If these people have to change, we will change as well but for the better and never for the worse. Let us not become like our enemies. Let us be better for own well being and if not for us, for the future generations.

Wow. 52 Paginas! Todo un semestre me tomo para terminar este proyecto! Una clarificación: Yo nunca apoyaría y jamas apoyaré a grupos guerrilleros o terroristas (por favor, después de lo que han hecho con mi país Colombiano!). Teniendo una joven guerrillera en la cubierta como la protagonista no refleja mi apoyo a estos grupos. Mi propósito es de mostrar a un personaje que va a pasar un cambio significante de una actitud oscura a una mas clara y espero que mis lectores puedan encontrar la metáfora detras de este personaje. Si esta gente tiene que cambiar, nosotros tambien pasaremos por una fase de cambio, pero para lo mejor y nunca para lo peor. No nos dejemos llevar por la ira como nuestros enemigos. Debemos ser mejor para nuestro propio bien y si no por nosotros, entonces para las generaciones futuras.

Yes, I'm Alive

Man, I'm so sorry guys! I've been having a disappearing act by not posting often as I wanted to, but it's because of the thesis! I'm like page 37 out 52-56, so I'm getting close to finish it! Sorry for the guys I couldn't even return e-mails because I keep working till 2 or 3am in the morning.... and you know, when you're working that long, writing e-mails or any kind of message becomes a challenge! Serious, I confuse English with Spanglish and words in Spanish become abstract images for me... but I'm enjoying project though! I just feel bad for not having the time to write responses like any educated human being. Shame on me.
So a sneak peak of what I'm doing...

Man it looks pretty... I think it looks well as a cover, I think.

Y tambien algunos videos en youtube acerca de él, y bueno, se me ablandó el corazón y le dedico este dibujo, por hacerme reir en el Noticiero"Quac" cuando era una niñita y pensar en el bienestar de los demas como una adulta.
El dibujo es basado en la fotografia de Carlos Duque- esto es solo una dedicacion y todos los derechos son reservados al fotografo. El unico provecho de esta pieza es un recordatorio para mi y los demas Colombianos que lo recuerdan con cariño.

This drawing is based on the picture made by Carlos Duque- and this is only a piece dedicated to him and all the rights are reserved for the photographer. The only advantage I'm taking from this picture is a good memory of him and for the Colombians who remember him dearly.

This is the story of Oscar Tulio Lizcano, a congress man who was kidnapped by the FARC (Revolutionary Colombian Armed Forces) 8 years ago. He escaped a month ago thanks to the help of the commander of the troop that held him hostage. It was a dangerous endevour because of the intense guerrilla activity around the area but they were able to to find a Colombian Army Camp and find their way to freedom without injury.

Hello! Well, classes started! Busy scheduling but enjoying my last year at Ringling. Tons of things to draw, paint, etc. I feel the rush and I feel the eagerness of doing many projects.

Abuelo- Granpa. He's fine. I mean, to be 94 is not easy but thank goodness he has us and my grandma. A small piece dedicated to him in my sketchbook of the Mono Meza ("Blond Meza" My grandma said he was blond when he was young and Meza is his last name).

Emberá Twins

I'm thinking using them as main characters in the future. The Emberá is an Indigenous group that live in the West Pacific coast of Colombia and Part of Panamá. I got fascinated by their culture and crafts recently so, I decided to paint a pair of twins: Kari and Gabi (and you put them together and it's the name of their Upper Level God (they believe there are different levels of realms and this one lives in the upper side).

I'm researching like crazy and reading all sorts of articles for my thesis story. Geez, too much to read so research is completed!
But now, some yummi snacks. Research needs snacks :).

Yeah, Bunnies. Like a Bunni-topia of sorts :P. Randomness came to my mind and now I'm drawing people I know as bunnies (or basing on their personalities to draw bunnies). It was one of our outside projects. It's my lovely mother and me when I was only a couple of hours born. :) Funny thing is, I'm the image of my mother (only with smaller eyes). I remember Tim being impressed by this ("oh my gosh, the same person!!"). Quite a laugh!

Megacon was cool! Many people for sure. I met cool people even though it was windy outside, brr! Many Spanish speaking people as well... I had to clear up my Spanish a little, haha. Tim, I Tunes and Caffeine are keeping me alive to keep doing this. I really think this is my first time drawing an armor from the old times. I like horses anyways :O. I wanted to portray a creepy coming from the darkness (almost "300" looking alike) "modernized" version of Ares, mister of wars. Next, I'll draw Athena (which is just another excuse to draw Miss Jordanne in a revolutionary costume XD). I did some art from the Runaways to sell, as well a belly dancer and some print outs from old works. Tomorrow is printing time- I'll try to keep it simple so I can have some space to draw in the conventions. I have to do homework too! Ahh... so much to do indeed!

Supposedly dad was coming with me and I was going to drive but Mom got a little scared and now she's driving instead. All right! More time for me to sleep in the car- I mean, organize and make everything shiny. I doubt I'll have a mini comic as I was planning but I still want to have the experience from the event and some profit out of it. It's going to be fun for sure :). I'm excited and Tim is coming on Monday, so it's happy time!

I miss enyucado (sweet yucca cake) or Sweet Coconut Rolls or some good fruit salad with caramel.... I miss hearing the black women singing the content of their food products (or candy) on the big containers on their head while I would peek on the window, waiting impatiently just to hear one to ask my mom for money to buy anything. My sister and I would run from the third floor of our house to the first to buy their stuff (did I mention candy already?).
So I drew a character like that. She was intended to be used for the Children's Book Illustration class but I changedmy mind and I wanted to use the Old Lady story instead. I missed her so much! I'm glad I can use her for something! I bet she's happy too.

And the final piece in acrylics. Wee perspective and kids! Funny I based the secondary characters from kids I was friends with in Kindergarden! And yes, there was this kid with the brightest eyes i've known and this other girl I was so jealous of (maybe 'cause she liked the kid with the bright eyes, grr! haha). I miss those days!

An Old Lady With Nothing Else to Eat

Well, she was. She was one of the characters from one of my favorite Colombian poets and children book's Romantic author Rafael Pombo. "La Pobre Viejecita" ("The Poor Old Lady") was one of the poems that struck the most in my mind (besides "Rin Rin Renacuajo") of how funny and sarcastic it was by telling the story of this old lady that supposedly was "poor" but had all the riches in the world.
I'm thinking of illustrating other works that I read as a child as well like Lygia Bojunga Nunes's "Mi Amigo El Pintor" ("My friend the Painter") the story of a boy who is friends with a painter that commits suicide and throughout the book explains the feelings of this boy and art after his friend's death. Also, the book "Angelica" from the same author and it's about a stork that is tired about myths behind her animal form and creates a theater play pointing and satirizing society rules and prejudices.
I was thinking to illustrate Gabriel Garcia Marquez but I rather do a Graphic Novel about his stories though.

I'm still layering some drawing for Gomien's last project for self- promotion. I'm having fun with this one indeed!
